Glad to finally see an update, what will the entry fee be for this race? Also will it be (4) 25 mile laps and do you have a twitter account to tweet updates?

Before 5/3/11 50 mile $ 70 100 mi - $ 155 _______
After 5/3/11 50 mile $ 115 100 mi - $ 185
We are working on a 3 lap 100 mile course with the new single track. We will evaluate the exact course once the snow melts out of the mountains.

While there is some nice clean climbing allowing riders to re-fuel and get into a rhythm, this is a Mountain bike course. The single track is technical, with a few rock gardens thrown in to keep you on your toes. The screaming double track into Dry Creek drops 1K worth the vertical in a couple of miles, and has a loose steep section in the middle. Nothing too scary and hairy, but this course likely does not suite a roadie by any means.

What are the climbs like. It seems that there are two that are over 1000K of climbing but with a moderate grade allowing climbing in mid-gears. Is that accurate? Are there any sections that are REAL steep, even for a short period? Do some riders have to walk these sections?
I guess I'm trying to better gauge the level of effort for this course given the amount of climbing and no flat sections in the profile. Could you compare any of the PH100 ride to trails at Winter Park, Vail, Moab, Fruita, or something similar?

Rodi,
There is one long road climb after the big singletrack descent. It is gradual and (for me) was a middle-ring climb.
The second, even longer ascent is on double track and is steeper. For me it was all rideable and was not very technical (from what I remember) but it was tough enough that I could see some walking here or at least stopping for a breather, especially after 8 hours or more.
The other, shorter climbs also have steep sections but I can't recall any that were not ridable. Keep in mind that this is based on last year's race and the organizers are considering some major course changes from the sound of it.
That said, this is a hell of a tough race with over 16K of climbing. And you're correct, there's damn little "flat" that I can remember. My first two 100 miler attempts were last year - Breck 100 and PH. My opinion is that PH is the tougher of the two, though I talked to a guy mid-race who thought that Butte 100 was harder yet.....

Thanks Richard.
Your descriptions really help and were exactly what I was looking for. I'm pleased that you didn't say there are a ton of short granny gear/walking climbs throughout the course. Those short steep climbs seem to take a lot out of me and I'm not sure I could do a lot of really tough little climbs and 100 miles.
So I guess now it is just time to man-up. I've never ridden a 100-miler but am doing a 70-mile race in two weeks so I hope that will give me a better indication of where I am at and if I should even attempt this. I did not want to sign up for the 50 and now it is sold out so I have left myself only one option . . .

It's been a while since any updates have been sent out. Do you have a final decision on the course? Will you be posting up a GPS file anytime soon?

How do we switch from 100 to 50 miler? Anyone?

Single Speed gearing for the 29 setup: last year the 50 mile winner (on a 29'er) used a 32/20 setup and this was good with the exception of the a couple of short section in Bustle Creek climb. You may consider gearing a bit higher than the 20 for this climb, depending on your climbing and sufferage abilities.
Switching from 100 to 50: email me at twbarry@juno.com with your request. You can switch without any refund available (as this would be an unfair way to sign up for the fifty now that it is full).
Due to snow on some of the course we have not ridden the entire course and thus had the opportunity to provide new GPS data. We will, and we will post it.

TIRE CHOICE.....TIRE CHOICE....TIRE CHOICE
The course in general is not too awful technical, but difficult with the 4000 vf of climbing per lap and alot of single track that you need to be focused for. Tire choice, I have been running the Conti Race King and think this is a perfect tire choice for this course (also the X King). I ran the Race King at the Breck100 and HC100 with out an issue. There are three or four short sections of rocks and one baby head section. None of these are more than about 50 meters in length. There are good lines through all these sections, but lose focus for a split second and you are likely to FLAT.
You want a fast low-profile with as minimal rolling resistance as possible to accelerate on the fast hard pan sections. However if you tend to ride "through" things, run a heavier side wall TPI constructed tire. If you are a "finess" rider, going light is very much a possibility. In fact, light is right (mostly). That being said No Tubes Crow in a 2.1 would be really fast, those running Schwalbe should think Fast Fred, or the Kenda (Series Sponsor) Small Block Eight would all be really good race day tires.
DISCLAIMER: This is one man's opinion, and I take no responsibilities for one's actually tire choice or result from this choice once the gun goes off and you are on course.

Guys,
Congratulations and thanks for a spectacular event! This was my first time for PH and my first 100. The event organization was great, the course very challenging while still being fun, the support fantastic, all-in-all it was a very pleasurable,(albeit painful), experience. The weather and course conditions couldn't have been better and how about those wildflowers and views! I suspect it will grow, but hope it never loses the grassroots feeling that made it such a special event. I want everyone involved to know that your efforts were greatly appreciated!! Hope to see you next year,
JS

There are few hotel/motel choices on the webantsk. Go to Yahoo Travel or Travelocity and search hotels near Gretna, LA 70053 or New Orleans, LA 70114.Another answer mentioned the La Quinta. Holiday Inn also has a property on the webantsk: Holiday Inn (www.priorityclub.com)NEW ORLEANS-WEST BANK100 WEST BANK EXPRESSWAY; GRETNANEW ORLEANS, LA 70053 UNITED STATESHotel Front Desk: 1-504-3662361Hotel Fax: 1-504-3625814 Crime tends to become a topic in questions about New Orleans. A lot of that is because New Orleans City Hall (for their own political purposes) continues to portray crack dealers killing each other during territorial competition as a crime wave . It doesn't make the murders OK, but you only have to worry about that if you plan to buy or sell illegal drugs while you are here. Use the same common sense you need in every major city in the world and there is little chance you will be a victim of anything except a need to visit the gym: Pay attention to your surroundings. Stay away from anywhere dark deserted. Pay attention to your feelings if anyone or anywhere gives you a bad feeling, leave the area. Don't leave something like a camera-bag or backpack unattended on a park bench while you wander off to take photos. Etc.Hope you have a good visit!
